The Elf on the Shelf knows if you’ve been naughty or nice

The «Elf on the Shelf» makes sure your children shape up during Advent season. This American Christmas tradition is now conquering Switzerland.
Advent calendars, wish lists, Santa sacks, baking cookies, Christmas markets, ice skating, secret Santas, decorating the Christmas tree – the Advent season has traditions galore. There’s one that isn’t yet too well-known in Switzerland, but that’s becoming more and more of a trend: the «Elf on the Shelf».

The principle is simple: the elf doll observes your child during Christmas season and reports back to Santa whether they’ve been naughty or nice. The elf doll must not be touched, though. Otherwise, its magic will be lost and it won’t come back next year. At least that’s what your child is supposed to believe. You, on the other hand, are encouraged to move the elf around. It’ll really bring the elf to life in your child’s mind.
In addition to the doll, there’s a children’s book that tells the elf’s story. It describes exactly what the elf's job is, what your child is allowed to do and what they’re not allowed to do.
All in all, it’s quite a heart-warming Christmas tradition. And unlike an Advent calendar, you don’t need to repurchase it every year – it stays with you and your family for as long as you want. Another advantage: under the elf’s watchful eye, your child is bound to be on their best behaviour. It’s a load off your shoulders during the hectic season of Advent.
Prefer a lady elf instead of the stock male version? No problem. Here’s the «Elf on the Shelf»: female edition:
