Advent calendar opened: a folding frenzy

We tested out advent calendars so that you don't have to. We were allowed to open all the doors in October. That way, you know which calendar could be the right one for you.

A few weeks ago, we came up with a supposedly good idea: testing out advent calendars from our shop. The problem: we have 1,000 different ones available in our range. So, we decided to go with a random selection. Hit or miss?

What does the manufacturer promise?

Origami fans and beginners alike should like this advent calendar. The product description outlines 24 folding instructions for Christmas decorations that claim no less than the «ultimate origami folding fun».

What can it do?

The calendar is short and simple: it’s a book with 24 origami instructions. While the book calendars from part 1 – the Harry Potter baking calendar and the manga drawing calendar – had closed sides that you had to open each day, you can simply flick through this one. It makes sense to stack the square sheets of paper supplied in order. That way, you can just pick up the sheet on top for each day and get started with the right piece of origami. The initial creations are actually pretty straightforward, becoming more challenging each day. Although that has something to do with the instructions, which aren’t always as easy to follow as IKEA ones. I’ve never done origami before. But I have to say, I really enjoyed my first attempt.

Who is it right for?

There’s no age recommendation. I think with a little help from me, my six-year-old daughter would enjoy at least some of the designs. Others would be too tricky for her, but I’d guess that children from the age of eight or nine will find the right amount of challenge in the 24 tasks. Some of the instructions are a bit too simple for experienced origami folders. Families with children aged around six or over will find the calendar a nice daily activity for both the children and adults, especially together.

Is it worth the money?

For around 18 francs, you get 24 doses of family-friendly, family-appropriate entertainment. And some of the instructions can be reused to make decorations outside of the festive season, such as for birthdays or children’s playdates. So, yes, it’s good value.

Rating: 22 out of 24 doors
