Advent calendar opened: a scratch advent calendar for the little ones
We tested out advent calendars so that you don't have to. We were allowed to open all the doors in October. That way, you know which calendar could be the right one for you.
A few weeks ago, we came up with a supposedly good idea: testing out advent calendars from our shop. The problem: we have 1,000 different ones available in our range. So, we decided to go with a random selection. Hit or miss?

What does the manufacturer promise?
Scribbling and scratching for children from the age of five. Children can scratch out 24 Christmas images with a wooden stylus and shorten the countdown. The publisher Ars Edition promises «a great, creative advent calendar for children».
What can it do?
This is a freestanding calendar with a stable cardboard front and back. The 24 images are scratched out of thick, quality paper. There are lines on the matt black surface of every page so that you or your child can see which parts to scratch off. So the promised creativity falls by the wayside somewhat. Although, depending on the child, they’re not likely to care because they don’t tend to stay within the designated scratching areas anyway. And there’s always something new to discover in the other areas. So a child doesn’t really have to stay within the lines.
Who is it right for?
Children from five years and up, according to Ars Edition. I’d say that younger children would also enjoy scratching out pictures. Admittedly, freely scratching out the whole image every day takes quite a bit of patience, perseverance and persistence that not every child possesses. On the other hand, it makes the fun last longer. The maximum age for enjoying the calendar depends heavily on the child.

Is it worth the money?
You don’t get a crazy amount for your money with this calendar. But it doesn’t cost a crazy amount of money either. If you want to, have the opportunity to or must buy it for a child who’s the right age and would enjoy the scratching, almost 23 francs isn’t too high a price to pay.
