So the basil doesn't go limp straight away

I'm sure everyone has had their own experiences with basil. If you talk to others about this herb, it quickly becomes clear that frustration and pleasure are very close together. To ensure that the pleasure and enjoyment of basil prevail in future, here are the unbeatable tips for a happy basil and an even happier basil owner.

You can find crisp, fresh pots of basil in every food supermarket. The herb has been grown under the best conditions in a greenhouse and brought into top form for the time of sale. Transport in the lorry, standing around in the supermarket and then the short trip in the shopping bag - the tender basil can't cope with all that. No wonder, who among us would still be beaming after such a journey!

Once everything is over, however, the plant faces a whole new challenge: your kitchen. The air, the light and the overall climate there are far from ideal for the pampered greenhouse basil. You can hardly blame it if it collapses after a few days and the first harvest.

Propagate or sow

A basil plant that you have grown yourself works much better. It is used to the climate in your home right from the start and doesn't have to survive transport. You can either sow the herb or make it even easier for yourself. Basil is very easy to propagate using cuttings. To do this, you can get another herb pot. Make several cuttings from it (approx. 8-10 cm long shoots and remove the lower leaves). Place these in a cup, egg cup or similar with water.

It is important that the container does not let any light through, as basil is a dark germinator. The first roots appear after a few days. After around 14 days, they will be so strong that you can place each individual shoot in a pot with rich organic potting compost. Your own basil plant is ready! You can do this all year round.

Harvesting correctly

Harvesting correctly is also very important to ensure that your plant lasts a long time. Don't cut the stems or tear off the leaves indiscriminately with scissors. This will stop the basil from growing. Instead, it is better to snip off the leaves just above the leaf axil. This is exactly where new leaves will grow back. When these are large, you can harvest the "old" outer leaves.

Please fertilise

Basil is a heavy feeder and therefore needs a generous dose of organic liquid fertiliser in the water every fortnight. A fertiliser stick can also do this job for you
.

This time it works - I promise.
