Professional tips: What you can look out for when choosing a sofa
by Moomii Interior Design Studio
Sofa beds don't exactly have the reputation of being the most comfortable. On the contrary. I'll show you models that are practical, cosy and pretty to look at.
When I was looking for a new sofa seven years ago, I decided against a multifunctional folding model for aesthetic reasons. Even though it would have been the ideal solution for me and my future visitors given the minimal space available in my three-room flat. Hospitality doesn't seem to be one of my best virtues. I regret that decision today. Not just because of the visitors, but also because it is now possible to combine looks, function and cosiness. Don't believe me? These "guest beds" might convince you.
Like my colleague Pia Seidel, I'm a fan of naps. Why? Because I fall into a brief slump after lunch, which not even a strong espresso can save me from. A power nap, on the other hand, does. Even better: if I spend it on a day bed like the one from Randers Zeal. The side lying surface of this model can either be folded up into armrests, turned into a divan on one side or into a couch on both sides. This means I'm not only always ready for a midday nap, but also prepared for a surprise guest who spontaneously arrives.
Important: A day bed is not a long-term sleeping solution. As it is rather narrow, it can happen that a guest with restless sleep reluctantly practices free fall.

Sofa beds are an advantage for small flats, as they only need to be folded out to the side. This means you only need extra space at the sides and not in the depth. The "Cubed" armchair sleeper from Innovation Randers, for example, can be converted from a seat into a guest bed for one person in an instant. The three-part mattress is supported by two invisible tubular steel brackets. The "Roots" futon model from Danish brand Karup Design transforms a sofa bed into a cosy lounger for relaxed Netflix evenings in an instant.
Important: As futon sofas are not equipped with a mattress, they are not suitable for long visits. The same applies to an armchair sleeper where the backrest is folded down, as the edge in this position can cause long-term pressure. [[product:9966945,6423467,6423523]]

If you have friends who regularly stay with you for several days at a time, you need a proper solution. A large sofa bed. I am impressed by the Recast model from Innovation. With the 3-seater sofa bed, you can make the most of the space in your living room and even receive visitors. To do this, fold the backrest of the sofa down horizontally. The double bed is ready.
Important: When buying, make sure you keep an eye on the dimensions when the sofa is converted into a bed. In the worst case scenario, you might have to turn the whole living room upside down. I also recommend that you favour a sofa with a spring mattress if your guests stay regularly and for long periods of time.

If I have not been able to convince you of a sofa bed at this point, there are also folding or inflatable beds. These models can be set up and put away again as required. Like the space-saving "Bed in a Bag" from Karup Design. The mattress can be stored in a protective cover in the wardrobe or cellar when not in use. The "Queen Motherboard" inflatable air bed from Intex even has a headboard.
Important: When buying an airbed, make sure that an electric pump is included. This means the mattress is ready for use quickly
