A good trench coat saves every outfit - here are 9
by Stephanie Vinzens
Scarf coats, or scoats, are currently trending. However, there’s no need to jump on the scoat bandwagon. Instead, follow this simple but effective styling tip.
Jackets and coats with integrated scarves are currently experiencing a hype. It was triggered in autumn 2022, when the short coat by the Scandi label Totême went viral. A year later, the oversized coat with wide sleeves and embroidered edges is still all over social media. In fact, the hashtag #totemescarfjacket has registered over 18 million Tiktok views as of December.
There are numerous (some quite shameless) copies of the Totême scarf coat and a number of brands have launched their own interpretations of coats with integrated scarves. The hype has even coined a new term: scoat, a blend between the words «scarf» and «coat».
Scoats are a nice addition to your autumn and winter wardrobe, but I wouldn’t say they’re a must. In my opinion, the hype is an inspiring styling lesson. It teaches us that a matching coat and scarf is a harmonious and stylish combo. The two garments look like they belong together and the scarf gives the jacket an elegant, draped look. The same goes for scarves and sweaters, by the way.
In other words, you don’t necessarily need a scoat to create the scoat effect. A scarf with similar colour and texture as your coat will do the job. The materials don’t have to be identical. That would be impossible. And playing with small differences – such as the same colour but a different texture or shade – can even enhance your outfit.
