Running clothing: functionality and style combined

When it comes to running clothing, as with footwear, functionality, quality and comfort should take priority - although there's no denying that the look and style of the outfit also play a key role in motivation. Once again, we asked Daniel Harder, running expert at New Balance, for his opinion on the subject of running clothing.
"Running clothing should preferably be made from synthetic, functional fabrics such as polyester or polyamide," explains Daniel Harder. "These breathable materials don't absorb moisture, but transport it outwards - so the T-shirt or shorts/trousers don't feel any heavier." What's more, as you sweat, a light layer of perspiration forms on your skin, which has a cooling effect.
Long or short, according to Harder, it all depends on subjective impressions and the intensity of the training. For tops, you can choose from tank tops, long- or short-sleeved T-shirts, and running jackets. If you listen to music while running, opt for a model with a special earphone holder, so that your headphones don't get in the way while you're training. For bottoms, there are shorts and boxer shorts. A lot of people prefer shorts, as they give their legs more freedom.
To complete your equipment, you still need a headband and a waterproof/windproof jacket - so you have no excuse when the weather is bad!

Don't forget functional underwear. For women, it's very important to wear a sports bra with the right support function. There are three different levels of support: low, medium and high. The larger the woman's cup size and the greater the physical effort involved, the more important it is to opt for a sports bra with good support.
Socks are often underestimated. Socks are often underestimated, but are just as important as tops and bottoms. They make the direct connection between the foot and the shoe: they must therefore be functional and not cause chafing.

Compression technology is a new trend in functional running apparel. "Compression garments, such as the SKINS models, increase the oxygen supply to active muscles during sport and improve blood circulation," explains Daniel Harder. This reduces pain not only after training, but also during exercise. This is based on the principle of eliminating lactic acid, pushing back the threshold of muscle exhaustion and, logically, improving performance. Optimising performance is made possible by the supply of oxygen to the muscle in question, so endurance during exercise is increased. Skins compression top and bottom technology reduces injuries. Since the compression garment exerts pressure on the active muscle, it will not exhibit vibration, which optimises prevention in the face of possible injury.
