Quick table decorations for Easter

Easter is just around the corner and you still need decorations for your plain table? Then take an hour or so and make the most of an egg carton.

On Sunday, not only does the Easter bunny come round, but for many, the family too. They look for Easter nests together and enjoy a sumptuous meal. A little decoration in the centre of the table is a must. Personally, however, I find a lot of what you can buy in the shops a bit tacky. The alternative is to do it yourself. And it doesn't take much time. Small candles in eggshells, embedded in all kinds of greenery, are my favourite. All you need for this quick DIY is:

Scrambled eggs as a reward

I use a carton of ten and four eggs. Choose eggs that are as large as possible so that they have enough space for a candle. You only need the bottom of the carton, cut off the lid and the flap on the side. Crack the top of the eggs with a knife and collect the contents in a bowl. Because you only need the shells, you can use the rest to make scrambled eggs once the work is done.

Pour some of the candle wax into a bowl and place it in a bain-marie. While the wax slowly melts, you can prepare the wicks for the egg candles. Get a couple of toothpicks and wrap one side of the wick around them. Now hang the poke across the opening so that the wick hangs into the egg.

Caution is the mother of the china box

As soon as there are no more lumps in the wax, it is ready to be filled. Empty it carefully into the eggshells so that the toothpicks stay in place. I was a bit hasty and postponed everything, which I will regret later. While the candles are drying, you can decorate the egg carton. How you want to do this is entirely up to you. I like it rather simple and only used some ivy, flowering rosemary, daisies and meadowfoam.

Once the candle wax is completely dry, remove the toothpicks from the wick. Your little Easter decoration is now ready. The only thing left to do is light the candles. And this is where I regret that I messed up beforehand. My wicks are so close to the edge that the eggshells are easily burnt. So really make sure that you place your wick in the centre of the egg. And even then, I wouldn't leave the candles unattended as they burn down very quickly. But the decoration looks good enough even without candlelight.
