Batteries hold on to top spot in our 2024 bestseller rankings
by Alex Hämmerli
Despite digitalisation, online retailer Galaxus is seeing rising demand for paper products. From craft paper and cue cards to classic photocopying and photo paper, in recent months customers can’t get enough of them. More and more stationery is landing in Galaxus shopping baskets too.
Many physical data storage devices have fallen victim to digitisation: cassettes, CDs and USB sticks are becoming increasingly rare. And of course paper is also a predestined victim, as more and more communication takes place online. However, sales figures from online retailer Galaxus show we’re still a long way from a paperless everyday life or office.
Our customers have continuously ordered paper products to their homes over the past year and a half. From craft paper and sticky notes to classic copy paper, there was an increase in sales of all sorts. This year’s growth is slightly lower than in 2023. However, demand has risen again compared to the same period last year.
Whether it’s for learning vocabulary, giving presentations or other notes, many people in Switzerland rely on cue cards. After an increase of 36% last year, Galaxus sold another 47% more cards over the virtual store counter in 2024.
Broken down by canton, consumption of paper products per capita is highest in the Rhone Valley. The people of Valais are at the top of the rankings, ahead of Zug and Zurich.
People in Uri and Vaud, on the other hand, buy the least amount of paper.
So what kind of pens are people using on their fresh sheets of paper? More and more Swiss people are apparently going back to basics. In 2023 and 2024, our customers purchased more stationery than in the same period of the previous year.
But that doesn’t mean there are fewer photocopiers. Just like ink cartridges, they’ve been selling at a constant high level for years.
The sales figures from Galaxus show that people in Switzerland regularly insert photo paper into their printers and prints out snapshots of their loved ones, holiday photos or other memories. These end up neatly pasted in photo albums or on walls.
Do you regularly use pen and paper or do you choose the digital option whenever possible? We look forward to hearing from you in the comments.
