Onion principle: every man should remember these 3 layering tactics

Layered looks are essential in winter. This can be annoying, but it simultaneously opens up many possibilities for exciting looks. These outfits show how to combine style with functionality.

Last week, I presented three layering options as style inspiration for winter. Via Instagram messages and in comments, you asked me if I could show off some menswear looks too. So, here are three beautiful and warm outfits that you can put together right away. As with the last examples, all genders can be inspired this time too.

Shirt + sweater + coat

We start with a very classic layered look that’s also suitable for more formal settings. If you want the combination of shirt, sweater and coat to look relaxed, elegant and as casual as possible, like on influencer Daniel Reith, opt for loose-fitting garments and leave the top button of your shirt open. A beanie and chunky shoes add a trendy touch to the outfit. If you want to be a little warmer, you can wear an undershirt or thermal underwear under the shirt.

«What it lacks in sleeves, the vest makes up for in styling options,» my colleague Laura wrote this fall in her plea for vests. Unlike the jacket, it doesn’t hide what’s underneath, but rather shows it off. Combined in many layers, as in this look by influencer Ike Slimster, a puffer vest is even suitable for milder winter days. And if you want to be even warmer, simply replace the T-shirt with a long-sleeved merino wool shirt for the bottom layer.

I love doubling down on jackets. It adds depth to the look and keeps you nice and warm. In my last layering article, I suggested the classic blazer and coat duo. This time we have a slightly more unusual combination of casual denim jacket and elegant coat, worn by influencer Alexander Walther-Momcilovic. The hoodie adds another exciting style break in contrast to the coat and shoes. What you choose to wear underneath is entirely up to you and your need for warmth.
