No more fancy colour trends: now it's time for normal red

It's time to take off your rose-coloured glasses - because everyone will be seeing red in future. Roll out the carpet for what is probably the most common trend colour in a long time.

In recent years, red has mainly made a name for itself as an ingredient in shades of purple and pink. Now, however, the primary colour has won the limelight for itself. Without the addition of blue and fancy names such as Very Peri, Digital Lavender, Orchid Flower or Viva Magenta - but simply as a normal, rich red.

The original power colour was last named "True Red" by the Pantone colour oracle as the trend colour of the year in 2002. "A vibrant red associated with love, passion and power, chosen for its deep and expressive hue," it was said at the time - and that still holds true today.

Rihanna could hardly have announced her second pregnancy more appropriately than in an all-red ensemble during her already celebrated halftime show at the Super Bowl. With her appearance, the 34-year-old predicted the future trend colour, as she has done before. At the beginning of 2022, she revealed her baby bump in a puffer coat in hot pink - the colour that ultimately dominated the year.

The coming seasons will be red

However, the magic of rose-coloured glasses is slowly fading. On the catwalks at least, it feels like everyone is wearing red. Fashion houses such as Ferragamo, Michael Kors and Loewe show that summer 2023 will be dominated by the most classic of all bright colours. Even Valentino's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, who coloured half of his winter 2022 collection in bright pink, is opting for classic red for the coming season.

This trend is likely to intensify in the coming months. Although only a fraction of the fashion shows for the 2023 winter collections have been shown, the red looks are already teeming. Fashion house Patou opened its show with six consecutive red looks and labels Marni and Theory also sent numerous models down the catwalk in red from head to toe.

These colour combinations work

The fashion houses also show how the trend colour is shown to its best advantage: monochrome. But don't worry if that's too extravagant for you. Red goes very well with other colours. You can hardly go wrong when combining it with black - the same goes for grey. For lighter colours, I would advise you to go for beige or off-white rather than pure white. Otherwise, it will quickly look like a Swiss flag or nurse's outfit.

If you want to keep it simple but still add a bit of colour, dark blue is a good choice. Various shades of denim - from light to dark - can also be combined with little risk. A striking but often seen counterpart would be pink. The combination with bordeaux, violet or cyan is somewhat less common but still very exciting. You can also subtly add a little more colour with accessories.
