digitec and Galaxus introduce quantity discount
by Alex Hämmerli

Galaxus customers can now rank their product searches by the «lowest unit price». Available across multiple product categories, shoppers will now be able to see which items are cheapest on a per-kilogramme, per-litre, per-terabyte or per square-metre basis. The feature will make searching for products even more transparent.
Which shampoo costs the least per litre? Which fruit gummies are the cheapest per kilo? Which hard drive gives you the most terabytes for your money? Galaxus has launched a new feature allowing shoppers to see which products are cheapest on a per-unit basis – and it’s available across 253 product categories.
The online retailer previously gave customers the option of displaying the lowest-priced products in a product category at the top of a list of search results. However, this would typically rank products in small packages first, despite the fact that they’re rarely better value for money. «This new feature makes shopping with us even more transparent,» says Oliver Herren, Chief Innovation Officer at Galaxus.
In some product categories, the feature has revealed a few surprises. Sort face creams by «lowest unit price», for instance, and you’ll find a price range spanning between 23 and 9,860 francs per litre. «That last cream has to be some kind of magic potion,» says Oliver. «Either that, or it’s just snake oil.»
Available with over 490,000 products, the new feature covers about five per cent of the Galaxus range. It’s been added to any product category in which more than half of the products have a unit price listed. Products that don’t have a unit price are displayed lower down in the search rankings.
Want to give it a go? Search for shampoo, laundry detergent or coffee beans, then sort the results by «Lowest unit price». Let us know what you think of the new feature in the comments.
