Microplane gourmet pepper set: anything but run-of-the-mill
I’ve crowned a small cylinder for milling spices my kitchen gadget of the year. The fact it comes with three types of pepper? An inconsequential side bonus.
For a long time, Microplane’s gourmet pepper set had been sitting in a pile of products I’d been meaning to review «at some point». In fact, it almost became one of those items that goes obsolete by the time «at some point» rolls around. I usually give that stuff to friends as gifts when they invite us to dinner. One day, however, I ended up opening the box out of sheer boredom.

A go-to grinder
Now the little cylinder’s sitting in my spice drawer, always ready to crush even the hardest of spices with its laser-sharpened teeth. The principle behind it is simple, with little need for mechanics. I pour pepper, nutmeg or coriander seeds into the top of the spice mill cylinder, where they then land on the grinding disc. Then I pop on the lid, which resembles a plunger with prongs at the bottom. All it takes is some gentle pressure and a twist of the lid and grinding disc to transform the coarse spices into a fine powder.

Spices… without the grind
So far, so simple. I don’t have to screw on the grinder. Nor do I have to set the coarseness of the powder. I can simply pour in spices and mill them. If you don’t have any suitable spices at home, Microplane supplies you with three types of dubious-quality pepper. But that doesn’t matter – the grinder itself is the star here.
With this in mind, I’ve ordered two more gourmet pepper sets as gifts. For friends who invite us to dinner.

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
