Making rainbow fish from salt dough

Salt dough is one of my favourite materials for crafting. I'll tell you the easiest recipe for it and show you how you can create a rainbow fish together with your children.

Back then, as a little girl in 3rd grade, "Der Regenbogenfisch" by Marcus Pfister was my absolute favourite book. My teacher advised me to read slightly thicker books with more text. But even though I loved reading, I was much more impressed by the pretty picture books, whose magical world I could immerse myself in. That has lasted to this day. I was also able to whet my children's appetite. Which is why we recently made some rainbow fish out of salt dough.

Recipe for the rainbow fish

For the dough, you need two cups of flour, one cup of salt, one cup of water and two tablespoons of oil. For the glittering scales of the rainbow fish, it is best to use a few colourful sequins or beads. It is also handy if you have a bowl, a piece of baking paper and a few baking or kneading tools for the preparation.

Bake, bake cake

1. To start, put two cups of flour, one cup of salt, one cup of water and two tablespoons of oil in a bowl. Knead this mixture until a firm and even dough forms. It should have roughly the same consistency as bread dough.

2. Using a rolling pin or kneading tool, roll out the dough to a thickness of about one centimetre.

3. Now cut out your desired shape with a knife.

4. Now press the colourful sequins lightly into the salt dough. Leave the fish to dry for a few days. I recommend turning the fish over once after 24 hours so that it can dry better on the back. That's it, the rainbow fish is ready to captivate everyone's attention.

How to handle salt dough successfully

Children from toddler to school age love modelling with salt dough. It can be moulded in a similar way to standard modelling clay. It is worth making thin works of art so that it can dry well. If you want to be a little more efficient, you can also use the oven. Set it to 50 degrees Celsius and bake the salt dough for one hour per 0.5 centimetre thickness.

If the salt dough breaks during transport or even when dry, you can simply glue it back together. You can also glue the sequins in place at a later stage. The salt dough can even be painted when dry. There are so many ways you can design this simple crafting clay.

This project allowed me to pass on my love of rainbowfish to my children. They are also completely fascinated by the glittering scales that the little fish gives to its friends.

What was or still is your favourite picture book? Let me know in the comments.

My students, but also my own children, inspire me every day with their wild imaginations. I love to document the creative projects that come from them on my blog Fantasiewerk. I hope to inspire many moms and dads to do crafts with their children. [Fantasiewerk.ch](https://fantasiewerk.ch)
