Lunchtime siesta, nap for life

I can't do without it. As I don't necessarily want to lie on the bed, I've found myself a chaise longue in the living room, succumbing to a very current trend in interior design.

When I was little, I hated it when my grandparents or parents said to me: "After lunch, why don't you go and lie down for a while, Pia? And in the evening, when it was time to go to bed, I would also put the brakes on with my feet. Why would I do that? Because I thought of all the things I could still do instead of sleeping, and I had an overactive imagination.

I'm 28 now, I still have as much imagination, but not the same stamina. "The day will come when you too will like to lie down for a while for a little nap," my dad used to say as he took a snooze after work. And he was right. Nowadays, I rely on coffee and sport to keep me awake, but the fact remains that I sometimes have a nose dive more often than I'd like. As a result, I advocate the little nap during the day, if only to ease up on my coffee consumption.

Trade shows, blogs and other publications swear by famous 1930s creations like the bench bed "Day Bed" by Eileen Gray or reinterpretations of the daybed such as the "Pulse" by Skagerak. Their popularity has not been stolen: a daybed, marked by the absence of armrests and accessible from either side, is the perfect place to relax. Who could be against a piece of furniture where you can daydream? Nobody, that's what I thought. I've just bought the "Square" meridian by Bloomingville for my own little naps.

"Square" looks quite lonely in my still-work-in-progress studio, but I like it. The usual rectangular cushion gives way here to a bolster, which I find particularly apt because I love the roundness of objects. And when it comes to furniture, Scandinavian design always finds favour with me. So it's no surprise that this chaise longue is in tune with my home: The daybed's base is oak and the mattress has a removable grey cotton cover. The result? A fashionable object with clean lines that encourages afternoon snoozing.
