Light, airy and stylish: "Breezyblanket" summer blanket tested

The "Breezyblanket" is supposed to feel like a fresh summer breeze on the skin on hot nights - at home and when travelling. I'm going to find out if that's true.

No matter how hot it is, I can't sleep without a blanket. It calms me down when I'm wrapped up. And during the day, a covered bed looks better. Because like a good outfit, a stylish bedroom unfolds layer by layer with pillows and blankets. But on sultry summer nights, my current set-up gives me a hard time. That's why I'm always on the lookout for a design for an airy cocoon that doesn't leave me and my bed naked.

On paper, the "Breezyblanket" collection from Relaxound, the brand behind the popular twitterboxes, fits my search criteria. It includes a range of ultra-soft Dohar blankets made from fine cotton fabric in soothing colour combinations. These are created by hand in India using a traditional process for fine fabrics and reflect the essence of the brand - minimalist, modern, comfortable, cool. So that I can test the blanket, Relaxsound sent me the model in the raspberry colour Berry.

The first impression

The Single Blanket arrives like a gift: Its black box with bronze-coloured lettering looks classy.

The box is far too good to throw away and can be used for storage thanks to its thick cardboard.

Before our first night together, however, the "Breezyblanket" first goes into the wash at 40 degrees, then straight into the tumble dryer. It survives both unscathed, but has a few more wrinkles than before. Nevertheless, I decide against ironing them. This emphasises the casual look.

On sultry summer nights

The first night with my "Breezyblanket" is not a dream, but it feels like one. It snuggles up to me without smothering me and creates a cocoon for me. Its surface is velvety soft. Much softer than my linen or cotton covers, which I usually use without a filling in summer. And it allows air to reach my skin, just as its name promises: the English word "breezy" means "windy" or "airy" and is often used to describe a light breeze. I don't notice any damp patches at night. Either because I don't sweat or because the blanket allows air to circulate and therefore dries quickly.

Relaxsound advertises that the "Breezyblanket" with its 577 grams is suitable for travelling. And indeed: although the blanket is three-layered, it can be folded up as compactly as my beach towel. So I can well imagine packing it in my suitcase for my next trip. After all, what could be better than having your own blanket with you in other people's hotel beds?

On cool (Swiss) summer nights

The bad news first: because the temperatures in Switzerland are fluctuating wildly at the moment, I'm taking the down duvet out of the wardrobe again on some of the days I tested it. The good news is that the "Breezyblanket" doesn't end up in the wardrobe. Instead, I use it as a throw to give my bed a splash of colour. Because I really like the intense raspberry colour.

A detail that is missing

Although sleeping with the lightweight sheet feels good, I miss a larger size. Not because I share the blanket, but because I would like it to cover my 180-centimetre-wide bed during the day. There is a larger version in the collection, but only in a different colour. Relaxsound says that the Double Blanket is only on the market in a more subtle colour because the Single Blanket sells much better.

In a nutshell

Good balance between warmth and refreshment

"Breezyblanket" feels more comfortable against the skin than the lightest sheet. With this model, I enjoy the comfort of a cosy blanket that is also so thin that I can take it with me when travelling. The three-layer structure provides a fresh breeze on balmy summer nights, while the layers of air between the fabric layers provide optimum insulation.

The "Breezyblanket" in Berry doesn't leave me naked, but my bed does. As the blanket is only available in a single size for one person, I can't share it, which I don't mind. I would just like it to be bigger for aesthetic reasons so that it covers the whole bed during the day. The price is also not without its drawbacks. Fitted sheets made from high-quality cotton fabrics in a similar size are available for less than half the price - even if they lack the beautiful hem and the shawl character.
