For years, trainers could hardly be chunky enough. Then, suddenly, their silhouette became narrower and narrower, the sole thinner and thinner. Before they disappear into thin air, sneakers are now trying their hand at being a ballerina hybrid.
In Arabic, there are around 100 synonyms for «love». In Icelandic, there are said to be around 50 words for «snow». And the fashion world? It has created three terms for its current favourite shoe trend: Ballet trainer, sneaker ballerina and - be strong now - sneakerina.
One thing you have to give the names credit for: they make it clear what kind of shoe they are. The narrow-cut, thin-soled low shoes, which are modelled on classic ballet shoes, are equipped with the sporty attributes of sneakers. A rubberised treaded sole, (elasticated) shoe laces and Velcro fasteners.
