Laura's Likes: 7 pieces for the iconic Jane Birkin look
She was an actress, singer, muse and mother. Now the British-French multi-talent has passed away - and leaves us with her unmistakable style.
She played "the blonde" in the 1966 thriller "Blow Up", the frivolous Pénélope in the classic "La Piscine" and breathed "Je t'aime ... moi non plus" into the microphone with Serge Gainsbourg in 1969. In addition to her passionate relationship with the French chansonnier, other songs and film roles, London-born Jane Mallory Birkin secured herself a place in the hearts and minds of the world thanks to her unmistakable style.
Her "French Girl Chic" is based on a recipe as simple as it is ingenious, for which you don't need much more than a good handful of selected basics:
- White or grey T-shirt
- white shirt
- Short crochet dress (preferably see-through)
- Jeans with straight leg or flare
- Basket bag (!)

When combined correctly - and occasionally mixed with classic Breton stripes for the sake of variety - these pieces create the legendary Jane Birkin look that made the actress a much-copied style icon. The tribute by French luxury house Hermès, which dedicated the "Birkin Bag" to Birkin in 1984, makes it clear just how much influence she really had.
