Vicafe is an espresso bar chain and roastery under one brand umbrella. The Swiss company focuses on sustainability and fairness in its production.

If you've strolled through Zurich recently, you may have noticed the Vicafe espresso bars. You can get your coffee shot on the go in the shop windows. Vicafe also offers its own beans, roasted in Zurich-Altstetten, for preparation at home. Coffee capsules for the Nespresso machine are now also available. They are available as «house blend» and «Crema» blend - and the good thing is that the capsules are compostable after use.

Two blends, one sustainable model

Both blends have a roast level of 4 out of 5. The house blend is said to produce a «strong, chocolaty, round» flavour. According to the manufacturer, the crema blend is milder, creamy and balanced.

Each pack contains ten capsules. Vicafe states that the raw materials used are 100 per cent renewable - including those for the packaging materials. They are free from petroleum-based plastic. Instead, they are made from the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate, a biodegradable polyester, and paper.

According to Vicafe, the product fulfils the existing demand for capsules. Coffee capsules are popular, but are not considered very sustainable because they often use aluminium and plastic. A lot of energy is used in the production of the small portions. The recycling process is also difficult and is therefore often not carried out. The Vicafe philosophy therefore provides for: If coffee capsules, then sustainable.

If you have a fully automatic machine or a portafilter machine in your kitchen, you can also find whole beans from Vicafe.

About the Vicafe brand

Vicafe products were created more or less by chance. It all started with the Swiss cola brand Vivi Kola, which disappeared from the shelves in the 1980s. Christian Forrer from Eglisau refused to accept this and bought the rights to the brand in 2010. He set up a shop in Eglisau, the first Vicafe, to sell the brand.

Obviously, business was going well and Forrer started roasting coffee beans in the shop. This was a hit with customers. Vicafe became not only the new brand for speciality coffees, but also a café chain. There are currently 15 Vicafe espresso bars in Zurich and two more in Basel.

Vicafe says it is aware of its ethical responsibility when purchasing and selling its coffee. The company has therefore successfully undergone a process to become certified as a so-called «B Corp». B Corps (Benefit Corporations) are companies that commit to ethically responsible behaviour. Among other things, they are transparent about their business practices, treat their employees fairly and promote sustainability throughout the entire supply chain.

For Vicafe, this includes negotiating directly with the coffee farmers and visiting them to see the production conditions on site for themselves.
