Home accessories from hell – why are these make-up organisers so ugly?
by Natalie Hemengül
I'm finding it increasingly difficult to decide which beauty gadgets I want to spend my money on. When the choice gets out of hand, the motto is usually: find the needle in the haystack. I say: burn the haystack.
You know what annoys me? The fact that I now have to draw up a budget plan to keep an eye on my beauty spending. But in order not to blame myself as a consumer for this misery, I now simply look for the brands that are driving me to ruin with new product launches every week. The relationship between supply and demand is overrated anyway.
To illustrate the problem, let me sketch out a typical morning for me: I wake up to the gentle sounds of my smartphone. Very shyly, I try to get my eyes used to the display light to bring my mind among the living. As luck would have it, I end up on one of my favourite Instagram accounts Trendmood. An account dedicated to spoiling upcoming beauty collections on a grand scale: there's a new highlighter from Becca, but no one is allowed to know? Trendmood has long since shouted it to the world. Want to eye up the Christmas collection from MAC as early as May? Trendmood hands you the binoculars! Want to see which ten almost identical pallets will soon be shaking up the market? Trendmood is getting in on the act!
Trendmood equals beauty news. Lots of beauty news. More beauty news every day. And in the end, way too much beauty news.
My initial euphoria has now given way to pure fear. Because I urgently need a (financial) lifebuoy to help me out of the flood of products. But there's not a lifeguard in sight. In other words, I am responsible for managing my cash flow myself. Unfortunately, it's no longer so easy to decide where my money goes and why. And it's not just the relaunches of existing brands that give me a headache. More and more new cosmetics labels are appearing on the scene. The consequence? The quality of the products has dropped significantly. The products are only half as well thought out, as they only have to fulfil short-term goals. Like being listed on Trendmood, for example, in order to signal to the beauty community: We're not resting and we're "on track". But maybe you've lost your way after all?
As a consumer, I'm getting tired. Tired of always having to compare things. Weighing up whether I should buy this lipstick now or whether there might be something better waiting for me tomorrow. I miss the days when I had just one eyeshadow palette. This one that I always tried to get the best out of because there was no other one around anyway. Those were also the days when a tutorial on YouTube was just a tutorial and the focus was on creating. Not the consumption. So I made a decision that was almost radical for me: No more "I'll buy it and see what happens" purchases. Because it often just sucks. So I only buy the essentials: shampoo, deodorant and the new Dyson Multistyler for 550 francs. You can still make small exceptions now and again, right? 😜
As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
