Fashion lingo: what is peplum anyway?
by Laura Scholz
And the Oscar goes to ... Peplum. Nope, you didn't miss any important blockbusters. Just the biggest trend of this year's Red Carpet. Here you are enlightened.
Checking the list of winners is quickly done for me after every Oscar ceremony. After the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and SAG Awards, few things are really surprising. My second step afterwards is much more exciting and time-consuming: the extensive scanning of all the red carpet looks. Who is wearing what and whom, which cuts and colours dominate, what trends are clearly recognisable?
The answer to the latter is crystal clear at first glance this year. Peplums are the sh*t. As recently as February 2023, I dedicated an entire article to peplums. You can read all about where the term comes from, what Ancient Greece and Christian Dior have to do with it here:
But back to Hollywood. Oscar winner Emma Stone, 'Black Panther' star Lupita Nyong'o and 'Dune: Part Two' actress Florence Pugh are just some of the advocates of a little more curves around the waist. Only the extent of the bosom is still a matter of debate. From elegantly restrained to sweeping and exuberant, everything was there.
Lupita Nyong'o and Florence Pugh emphasise their hips in a timid but unmistakable way. While the former opted for a look with a feather peplum by Armani Privé, the latter let the Italian brand Del Core curve around her.
Emma Stone not only left the Oscars as the official winner of Best Actress in a Leading Role, her little dress is also worthy of an award. It was conjured up for her by Louis Vuitton. Her colleague Gabrielle Union walked the legendary red carpet in a peplum dress by Carolina Herrera.
Is this still a peplum or already an inflated bubblegum bubble? Ariana Grande didn't let herself get carried away and appeared as a walking candy at the 96th Academy Awards. Her "Full on the Twelve" look was customised by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. Good enough to burst.
Always in the mood for good hits, great trips and clinking drinks.
