Hand luggage hack: changing bags are perfect for travel

No, I don’t have children. But I still own a changing bag. It’s not just parents who can benefit from their practical storage.

My colleague Natalie gave me the idea a few months ago. She’d seen on TikTok that the spaciousness and many separate compartments of changing bags make them the ideal hand luggage for travel. Firstly, that sounded absolutely logical and, secondly, it was just right for my upcoming summer holidays. So, I started scrolling through our range and, after some searching, actually found a bag without «Mummy» or «Baby» on it or a childlike design: the plain-coloured «Multi Purpose Bag» by Citron. At 30 cm in height, 39 cm in length and 25 cm in width, it also complies with current hand luggage guidelines. Add to cart, checkout, buy now, thank you.

A few days later, my find arrived – including a changing mat, which went straight back in the box unused. All the other features – the detachable, padded shoulder strap, two outside and three inside pockets and the insulated bottle holder – just increased my excitement to test it out.

In use

I have two weeks of vacation in Italy coming up. After I filled my basket with all my summer essentials, I set about kitting out my new hand luggage. Films for my camera are stowed in one inner pocket, headphones and a charging cable in the other. There’s one left for my passport, rental car voucher and other paperwork. I use the main compartment to store my camera, wallet, book, the obligatory bag with my liquids… and there’s still space left.

I was starting to feel like Mary Poppins and considering putting a lamp or a houseplant in my bag next. Instead, I opted for my fan, a pair of flip-flops and a jumper. I can put my sunglasses in one of the outer pockets and keep them close at hand. Struggling for space? No chance.

Another plus of the Multi Purpose changing bag is its stable base, so it can be easily transported through the airport and my destination on top of my hard-shell suitcase.

Verdict

Sure, there are other handy, spacious bags around. But I still love the changing bag hack. The Multi Purpose Bag is beautifully simple – a real space saver, incredibly comfortable to wear thanks to the soft cotton and it can also be washed on a gentle cycle if things get a bit messy on the go.

Since my summer holidays, I’ve also used the changing bag on several short trips, and it won me over with its Mary Poppins vibe. Thanks for the tip, Nati.
