Get the best out of your eyeshadow

Bought, tested and disappointed? If your eyeshadow doesn't give off enough colour, you can reach into your bag of tricks if necessary.

Does your new eyeshadow look needy when applied, despite the expensive primer you've been persuaded to buy? Don't worry, you can spice up its pigment density with the following tricks.

Use your finger

If you apply shimmering eyeshadows with your finger, they will look better on the eyelid. The warmth and skin oil will absorb more pigment. Just make sure that you apply them with enough pressure afterwards. Any harsh edges created with this technique can be blended out afterwards with a blending brush.

Moisture

Moisten your brush with water or a setting spray before sinking it into your eyeshadow. This way, more pigments stick to it, which combine to create a creamy, opaque texture. The result: the colour glows more intensely. If you don't like the idea of moisture getting into your dry powder product, you can also wet the brush after you have applied the product. This trick is particularly suitable for shimmering eyeshadows.

Black and white

Bold colours such as yellow, blue or green glow most intensely when you paint them on a white canvas. The same applies to your eyeshadow: the brighter your eyelid, the more the colour pops. You can achieve this effect by using a creamy base that is lighter than your skin colour. This also ensures that enough pigment sticks to it. I even use a white cream eyeshadow as a base from time to time. If you employ duochrome eyeshadow and dark glitter shades, you can use the same principle - but with a black primer. For an intense "smokey eyes" look, apply a black cream eyeshadow or creamy eyeliner to your moving eyelids and then blend it upwards. If you then dab your eyeshadow over it, it will stand out strongly.

Tip: If you are unsure which base colour harmonises best with your eyeshadow, you can test the different combinations on the back of your hand beforehand.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
