5 make-up mistakes you can easily avoid

Poorly blended eyeshadow, a spidery liner or stuck eyelashes? You can avoid these little faux pas with a few simple tricks.

There is no "wrong" or "right" when it comes to make-up. As long as you like what you're wearing and how you're wearing it, everything is fine. It's a different story if you want to achieve a certain effect but fail because you don't yet know the following tricks:

1. knock off first

Powders of all kinds have a pitfall: you can go overboard in no time at all. Too much bronzer or cheek rouge quickly look too colourful, while too much setting powder makes your skin look older and duller because it highlights fine lines and has a mattifying effect. To prevent this from happening, all you need to do is tap the brush after picking up powder. For example, by gently tapping the brush against the edge of a table or the lid of your powder jar. The excess powder falls off and you retain control over how much powder lands on your face. You can always apply more. Removing powder that has been applied, on the other hand, is very time-consuming.

2. too much pressure

If you like to apply your eyeshadow edgy and imprecise, you can skip this point. If, on the other hand, you want clean colour gradients and blended transitions, you need to treat your eyeshadow like a pampered film star: with a lot of attention, patience and sensitivity. Employ feather-light movements - circling or sweeping back and forth. Build up the colour little by little. This will help you reach your goal faster than if you use pressure. If you press your brush too hard against your eyelid in the hope of spreading the product faster, you will unfortunately achieve the opposite. Hard lines or smudges will form.

As above, the same applies here as with powder: tap the brush after it has gone into the eyeshadow pot. This ensures that as much of the eyeshadow remains on the brush as it can hold. If you skip this step, the excess will end up under your eyes.

3. shopping in the right light

This point doesn't exactly relate to make-up itself, but it has a big impact on how complexion products (foundation, powder, concealer and bronzer) look on your skin. If you know your skin tone or already have a favourite product from the category, you can shop for your back-ups online. However, if you are still looking for the right foundation, for example, it is important that you test the product in a shop beforehand. Have the product applied and ask if you can go outside with a hand mirror to get some fresh air. You can judge the colour choice much better in daylight than in the dim light at the counter. This will save you a nasty surprise after your purchase.

4. eyeliner in suspension

Eyeliner is the supreme discipline when it comes to make-up. Drawing it as symmetrically as possible on both eyes requires a lot of concentration. Especially when your hand is hovering in the air with the eyeliner. There is a little trick that will make this already difficult task easier. Rest your little finger on your cheekbone. This way you're not working completely free in the air and you have support, which gives you a steadier hand. Of course, this is not a magic trick that will guarantee you the perfect eyeliner overnight. But it will take you one step further.

5. clumped eyelashes

Layer upon layer. That's how most people apply mascara - including me. For many, however, this ends in clumped lashes, which they then desperately try to save with more brush strokes. Which only makes it worse. The problem: after one coat, your lashes are sticky and wet. Each additional coat increases the chance of these lashes sticking together because you're adding more ink and movement. Wait around 30 seconds between each coat. This way, the lashes are almost dry and the lashes that have already been separated in the first coat remain separated in the next coat. They only increase in density and length.

You see, it's often the details that decide whether your make-up looks the way you want it to. Small tips, big effect. At least I hope so. 😊

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
