Fondue and mulled wine: a match made in heaven!

Drinking a glass of red wine in front of the fireplace in the warmth of the parlour in winter is nice. But savouring mulled wine and fondue under the stars by a warm campfire with your loved ones is hard to beat!
Fondue indoors is delicious, but somehow not very romantic. Our suggestion: why not prepare your fondue outside? It may be cold, but we can help. Not only because of the campfire, but also because the atmosphere under the starry sky will warm your heart even more. Melted cheese on bread is as much a part of Switzerland as chocolate and the Matterhorn. That's why we thought about it: What belongs in the best fondue of all time?
Fondue recipe
The classic basic recipe consists of one third Gruyère, one third Appenzeller and one third Emmentaler. You can expect 150 to 200 grams of cheese per person.
In our example for 4 people, you need the following ingredients
- 800g coarsely grated cheese
- 4dl white wine
- 2-3 level teaspoons of cornflour
- 2-3 cloves of garlic
- 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 small glass of kirsch
- a pinch of nutmeg and pepper
And this is how it works
Rub the quartered garlic cloves into the grill pan and slowly bring the sliced or chopped cheese to the boil with the white wine for approx. 15 to 20 minutes, stirring constantly. Dissolve the cornflour and lemon juice in the kirsch and add as soon as the cheese has melted. The mixture is then flavoured with pepper and nutmeg.
All that's missing now is the finely diced bread. Sautéed bacon cubes, for example, make a tasty change, but boiled potatoes are also a great accompaniment to cheese fondue.
Nothing stands in the way of savouring a fondue under the stars. And what goes better with a cosy fondue evening at this festive time of year than a delicious mulled wine? Exactly: nothing goes better! Alternatively, you can of course also conjure up a fruit tea or non-alcoholic punch in the kettle.
Mulled wine recipe
The recipe for white mulled wine is very simple: mix all the ingredients listed below together and heat them gently over a campfire by moonlight. Make sure that the mulled wine does not boil so that the alcohol does not evaporate.
Ingredients
- 7dl white wine (alternatively: fruit tea for the non-alcoholic version)
- 1 orange, juice only
- 1 lemon, juice only
- 2 mandarins, juice only
- 5 cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
And the mulled wine is ready, but be careful: it's scalding hot!
