Five fashion brands I think we should add to our range

Elon Musk has bought Twitter for 44 billion US dollars. But I’m more interested in his influencer mum Maye and her grandiose 70-plus style
«Twitter is selling its soul to Elon Musk». That was the headline served up to me by streetwear blog High Society as I was sipping my morning cup of tea. I then found myself wondering: what soul? Twitter and I have never really warmed to each other. Yes, the platform creates space for enviable wit, on-point wordplay and the ability to follow the headlines in dizzying real time. On the other hand, the platform also has some passionate tweeters unabashedly chirping fake news, hate and cancel culture. Even if it is on the World Wide Web, my concept of a positive environment is somewhat different. At any rate, the platform is soon to belong to Space X founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. After all, if you have an estimated 265 billion US dollars in assets at your disposal, you can buy anything. So, what exactly does all this mean for the social media platform and its «soul»? I couldn’t care less. Instead, I’d like to use this opportunity to draw your attention to a completely different member of the Musk family.
Maye is a studied nutritionist, highly sought-after model, successful author, mother of Elon, Kimbal and Tosca Musk – and is 74 years old. What’s so special about that? Well, whether they’ve just come of age or are thirty ... ahem ... something, influencers are a dime a dozen. You’ll hardly find any inspiring ones over the age of 40. Or anyone of that age who’s offered a platform. And over 70?! My only impromptu brainwaves there are Linda Rodin (74), Daphne Selfe (93) and Iris Apfel (100!). And obviously Maye Musk. What can we learn from her? Three lessons in style
1. Fashion knows no age limit
Pastel power suits, breezy maxi dresses, bucket hats or head-to-toe leather – Maye wears what she likes. After all, current trends aren’t the preserve of one specific age group. No. Even if you’re 52, 67 or over 70, you’re allowed to throw on whatever makes you feel good.
2. Colour is still allowed – even desirable
Once we hit a certain age, dull colours have a habit of sneaking into our wardrobes, levelling off the colour spectrum at demure blacks, greys and beiges. Whatever happened to sky blue? Or hot pink? Lemon yellow or «Very Peri» purple? Don’t banish your favourite colours from your life just because your 20s and 30s are long gone.
3. Casual works too
Comfort, however, doesn’t have to go out the window. But that doesn’t necessarily mean reaching for the baggy sweatpants that we’ve been wearing for the last two years, happy as pigs in muck. Maye Musk demonstrates how cool yet chic a simple long-sleeved top and dungarees can be. Didn’t have combos like these on your radar until now? That’s exactly my point. Twitter may have lost its soul to Elon Musk, but Instagram has gained heart with Maye Musk.
