Do it yourself: Water bubblers tested

Carbonating water yourself has two main advantages: You no longer need to carry water bottles and you protect the environment. However, the quality of the devices varies greatly.

I found it almost magical back then when we had the first sparkling water maker in the family. Tap water became sparkling water at the touch of a button! How does that work? In the meantime, home soda machines have become established. Especially in Switzerland, it makes sense to make your own fizzy water: our tap water is often even better than packaged water. Why you buy packaged water from France, Italy or even further afield is beyond me personally.

Costs a little more, but only brings benefits

The consumer magazine Saldo has done the maths: mineral water from the shop is three times cheaper than making your own water. However, making your own sparkling water is also eight times more environmentally friendly and you no longer need to lug around bottles. The most practical thing about the test winner is that the water bottles are made of glass and are therefore dishwasher-safe.

The Saldoredaktion's buying tip comes from the same manufacturer: the Sodastream Spirit is easy to use and can prepare water in three sparkling strengths. It works with the same carbon dioxide cylinders as the test winner.

And the third-placed sparkling water maker tested also comes from Sodastream. It is the company's most expensive device, but scored an even 6 in the "carbon dioxide dosing" category.

If you value design and compatibility, then the sparkling water maker from Swedish company aarke is the device for you. Practical: it works with Sodastream cylinders.

In the end, two products from the company "MySodapop" scored "sufficient". On the one hand, the test criticised the fact that one button had become a little loose and on the other hand, the water sometimes overflowed when bubbling.

You have to decide for yourself whether to treat yourself to an aerator. However, for the sake of your back and the environment, I definitely recommend buying one. <p

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
