Cooking badly is her profession: "Worst of Chef"

The German "Food Bloggers of the Year 2017" were guests at KOSMOS in Zurich for a cookery show. Doesn't sound very exciting. But Jonathan Löffelbein and Lukas Diestel run the blog "Worst of Chefkoch" - a collection of the worst Community recipes.

"Now it's time to calibrate the moped in the oven and I'll see you in 15 minutes," says Löffelbein before the break and pushes the apple sausage into the oven. He has previously slit a whole Lyoner sausage, filled the slits with ketchup and mustard and put apple slices in them. The recipe from user "Beate1963" is just the tip of the iceberg. On their blog, the two present recipes that can only be described as an "offence to humanity".

From beer idea to full-time job

"We actually started the blog for us and our friends. The idea came up in the beer garden. We thought it was a fun project and it would peter out after a month anyway," says Jonathan. The Community can upload their own creations to Chefkoch.de. That doesn't always go down well. Jonathan and Lukas collect the ugliest, most absurd and funniest recipes and publish them on a free blog. "Suddenly online magazines became aware of us. Ze.tt, Bento, T-Mobile. They all reported on us. We then panicked and opened a Facebook and Instagram account afterwards."

A year and a half and over 40 stage appearances later, they are performing in Switzerland for the first time. It's obvious that Jonathan and Lukas have more stage experience than cooking experience. Both are amateur actors and slam poets. They had already performed their texts before "Worst of Chefkoch". It is the texts that hold the show together. There is a short story for every recipe, both on their blog and on stage and, since last autumn, in print as a paperback.

Lyricism wrapped in bacon

Is "Worst of Chefkoch" now a cookery show? A comedy show? Or even culture? In fact, it's a bit of everything. While they cook, the audience reads texts. The two friends (they live together in a shared flat) also like to digress from time to time and tell anecdotes from their lives. In fact, it's a wild ride and you have to be prepared for mischief. The audience can and should taste the dishes. No problem for me as a ramp sow, or so I thought. After the "tomato platter á la Andi" (yes, the A must have an "accent aigu"), I give up. It was the first recipe of the evening.

What followed were recipes beyond any flavour. Here, Nutella is mixed with cheese, pretzel sticks are used as the basis for a casserole or vodka is served with Maggi. For the entertainment and disgust of the audience. Culture packaged in a fun stage show. As a lover of poetry slams and jokes below the belt, I got my money's worth. A few visitors probably expected more culture and left the theatre early. A few visitors probably expected more thigh-slappers. You can't please everyone. After all, it's like Nufleika toast: just because the individual ingredients taste good doesn't necessarily mean that everything tastes good together.

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
