Purina ONE Adult
Adult, 4 pcs., 340 g
Last October, Swiss consumer magazine Kassensturz put different kinds of wet food for cats to the test. From chicken to rabbit to beef to turkey: The majority contained too many minerals that can damage your cats’ kidneys.
The majority of the tested wet foods contained high levels of calcium and phosphorus. Both minerals can have long-term negative effects on a cat’s health. Large quantities of calcium, for example, could mean that your furry friend is deficient in zinc, copper or iron. What’s more, excessive consumption of phosphorus can lead to kidney damage.
The cat food was tested for nutrients (crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, crude ash), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, potassium, chloride), vitamins (vitamins A, E, D3) and trace elements (iron, copper, manganese, zinc, selenium, iodine). Furthermore, the Technical University of Munich investigated the amount of total sugars as well as the amount of cell-protecting amino acid taurine. Click here to view the complete test (in German).
The following two products were rated excellent regarding trace elements and nutrients, satisfactory for minerals, good (Purina One) and excellent (Felix) for vitamins. Purina One got penalty points for its somewhat high total sugar content. Both manufacturers use sugar to make the food visually more appealing. With the Felix brand, only the chicken flavour was tested.
Purina ONE Adult
Adult, 4 pcs., 340 g
The test winner was rated excellent for trace elements and vitamins, good to excellent for nutrients and good for minerals. This catapulted Royal Canin to first place by a long way. However, it must be said that this cat food is the most expensive per 100 grams among the tested types.
