3 books that have changed my view of life
by Natalie Hemengül
When Simon Balissat sees the incense sticks lit and the crystal pendulum drawing a circle, he can't help but roll his eyes. But he still wants to know his future. He's in luck: I know a bit about tarot.
I spent much of my teenage years reopening my eyes in disappointment to discover that I hadn't been teleported. Fans of the cult series 'Charmed' will know what I'm talking about. Crystals, elixirs and pendulums were my equivalent of Wendy's magazine, much to the chagrin of my teachers and parents. They felt that a 12-year-old girl had no business doing that. With the help of my two friends (there must have been three of us: Piper, Paige and Phoebe!), I spent hours brewing potions from herbs found in the kitchen cupboards. The resulting concoctions were so disgusting that I felt nauseous just smelling them. So I was sure I could use them in an emergency, for example to drive demons out of hell.
The years passed and I stopped my pseudo-practice of white magic. Everything to do with the supernatural continues to fascinate me and fuel discussions with less spiritual colleagues, such as Simon Balissat. It's for moments like this that I live.
Somewhere in Sacramento, on my last visit to the US, I forced my two travelling companions - both members of Simon's 'eyes in the sky club' - into an esoteric shop. While I toured the shop from the height of my little five-foot-five, light-hearted and bright-eyed, my friends made their way through the narrow corridors, banging their heads against dream catchers, crystal mobiles and hanging pendulums. As a souvenir, I bought a tarot deck beautifully illustrated with animals, although I don't know how to use it. Thanks to these cards, we spent some funny evenings on our motel beds, where I tied my pyjama bottoms around my head to improvise as a fortune-teller.
I still don't know how to lay down the cards "correctly". The only thing that's clear is that there seem to be several ways of doing it. That's what gave me the courage to organise a tarot session with Simon Balissat, hoping to find my own way. After all, everyone has to start at some point. A few clicks, tutorials and pages of manuals later, I have a basic understanding, but also a lot of unanswered questions. I hope to have them soon. Or I could just ask the cards...

This video (in German) was shot before the days of social distancing. As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
