Greenery instead of chocolate: what’s inside a plant calendar

With this Advent calendar by Feey, you won’t put on any weight. Instead of 24 chocolate treats, it gifts you plants. I took a closer look at the Jungle Edition of this plant Advent calendar.
A few weeks ago, I wrote a short news article about a plant Advent calendar. Wait, an Advent calendar with real plants? How’s that supposed to work? Well, I decided to find out and got myself the Jungle Edition by Feey.
Watch out, big box coming
I admit, I should’ve read the product description more carefully. The box that arrives – and is lugged up the stairs by the DHL courier – is mighty impressive. The calendar comes in a huge cardboard box that’s about 50 × 50 centimetres.
I’m very careful unpacking the box. as it contains real plants. In addition to some printed boxes and cardboard sheets, which later form the calendar, three large folding boxes stand out.
They contain three surprise plants, which I unpack immediately. Each of them is about 40 centimetres tall. They come in clever packaging, with the cardboard protecting the plant body and leaves and foil covering the pot to prevent the soil from trickling out. However, this clever packaging only works if the delivery service pays attention to the massive sign on the box saying «this way up». Otherwise you’ll end up with a mess. There’s lots of filling material, which ends up in the bin.
You need plenty of space
The plant calendar is designed to create a small Christmas-themed village. That’s why the 24 boxes look like little houses or are combined to create house fronts. And as every house needs a roof, you have to fold these from the craft sheets and put them on the boxes.
You can easily peel them out, as they’re pre-punched. Overall, putting the little houses together is a bit fiddly, but that might just be me. I don’t have the best fine motor skills. It takes me about three quarters of an hour to set up the entire Christmas village.
Now I need to decide where to put it. Not an easy task, as I live in a small two-room apartment. I decide to place the calendar on the couch table for the time being.
Lovingly designed gifts
Unfortunately, I had to ruin the surprise for myself and open the calendar boxes. Every single house. Want to know which 24 gifts are inside them? Here you go:
What I can say without spoiling the surprise for you is that this calendar is made with a lot of love for detail – from the packaging to the gifts themselves. And you even get nicely designed care instructions for all plants.
All plants in this calendar are low maintenance and should do well, even if you’re a plant newbie – provided you don’t forget about them.
Now that I’ve unpacked all 24 gifts, there’s no way I’m putting them back in their boxes. So I find a place for every one of my new green flat mates – and hope my green thumb (and my boyfriend’s) develops.
In a nutshell
Great for plant enthusiasts
I give the Feey Advent calendar four out of five stars. It’s a great concept and the contents are well chosen and nicely presented. Why not five stars? Because the calendar’s quite pricey and produces a lot of waste. But if you’re looking to treat yourself or someone else who enjoys plants and decoration, you’ve found the perfect gift.
