Fresh from the grill: Baked apples with quark filling
by Daniel Haupt
Bananas with spices... For when? As an appetiser when you're having a barbecue.
More often than not, it's the simplest dishes that are the best! Spiced bananas are very easy to prepare and are a real delight.
You'll need the following ingredients:
Peel the bananas and cut into pieces measuring between four and five centimetres long. This should do the trick if you cut the banana into thirds. Choose ripe bananas for this recipe. They have more flavour and absorb the Tabasco better.
To make this recipe, I opted for mini bananas. I find they have even more flavour and you only need to halve them.
Take a bowl big enough for all your bananas and put about 1.5cm of Tabasco in it. Add the juice of half a lemon. This prevents the banana from browning too quickly and adds an acidic flavour that goes very well with that of the Tabasco.
Place the banana bits in the Tabasco/lemon mixture and leave for around 20 minutes. Stir from time to time, so that all the banana ends are soaking in the Tabasco.
We're going to use bacon once again to add a little something extra to our aperitif. Wrap the bacon completely around the banana and secure with toothpicks.
Prepare the grill for medium indirect heat (150° - 180°). Cook the bananas for around 30 minutes. Your aperitif is ready once the bacon is nicely grilled and crisp.
Your guests will be surprised to have bananas as an aperitif and they'll love them. Happy eating!
