The fashion world has plenty of curiosities up its sleeve. No wonder: fashion designers these days have to shock in order to stand out from the crowd of designers - figuratively speaking, of course. Luxury brand Balenciaga has once again taken the cake. This time with a necklace.

No, this necklace is not a party gag, but pure seriousness from Demna Gvasalia. The designer created a necklace made of carabiners for Balenciaga's autumn/winter collection and is charging a whopping 900 francs for it. Yes, you read that right. The Georgian fashion designer is known for his extravagant pieces, for which you have to dig deep into your wallet. Too deep, if you ask me. That's why I'm trying a DIY and giving the piece of jewellery a chance, even if I'm a little sceptical about the whole thing. [[image:18520203]] Here we go. I use 8 carabiners, which will hopefully be enough for a necklace.

For the high-fashion piece you need:

2 x 3 carabiners from Black Diamond
2 x 1 carabiner from Petzl

The highlight: the only tedious part of this DIY project is untwisting the individual clasps on the carabiners. Once you have untwisted all eight hooks, hook them into each other and close them again to create a chain. If necessary, you can add or remove a carabiner to play with the length. Your "almost like a Balenciaga necklace" is finished. As expected, the result is only moderately convincing. Does the necklace look better when worn? Well, everything is more beautiful on the catwalk.

My tip: If you're now fired up, it's best to get as light a carabiner as possible. Otherwise you risk straining your back from wearing this neck jewellery. I found the hooks I used from Petzl and Black Diamond to be okay in terms of wearing comfort. My tip: choose gold or bronze carabiners for a classier touch.
