A fur for which no animal had to die
Wearing Grosi's vintage ermine coat is frowned upon. Faux fur, the previous alternative, is anything but environmentally conscious. A sustainable denim coat is now set to provide a remedy.
People are divided on the topic of real fur: Is it okay to wear fur if it's an heirloom? Or should you do without it? There are now plenty of alternatives made from faux fur. However, these are anything but exemplary in terms of sustainability, as polyester is used for fake fur. The synthetic fibre is made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Another disadvantage: polyester textiles release microplastics with every wash, which end up in waste water. So if you value biodegradable and sustainable materials, fake fur is not an option for you either. Textile manufacturer Isko and up-and-coming designer Tiziano Guardini, who is known for his sustainable fashion, have tackled this problem. Their solution is "denim fur", a shaggy denim fabric that is visually reminiscent of fur.
Haters gonna hate
Critical voices will question this innovation, as the production of denim is considered particularly toxic. Anyone who has observed the fashion industry recently knows that a change has taken place in terms of jeans production and sustainability. A prime example of this is Isko's denim fur, which is made from certified organic cotton and recycled cotton. The textile company's innovation is based on a new technology that makes the cotton-wool blend look hairy.
The fabric manufacturer admits that denim fur is not (yet) visually identical to fur. Nevertheless, it embellishes garments just as much as real fur. With its latest project, the textile company is now going one step further: the material "Isko Wild" looks even more like fur and will soon be seen and purchased in one or two collections.
