10 products you do NOT need before birth

Are you pregnant? Some parents-to-be don't feel overwhelmed by the fact that they're going to have a baby, but rather by all the things they need to buy as quickly as possible. Don't worry, just breathe! Here are 10 baby items that I don't think you really need before the birth. You can buy them later if you need to!

1. Toys

At first, baby can't do much other than sleep, eat and fill his nappies. So there's no point in rushing out to buy cuddly toys, rattles, mobiles and other stimulation mats. And don't forget that we often receive these types of toys as gifts. So take them off your shopping list for now.

2. A breast pump

You'll learn how to breastfeed after the birth. Before then, you won't know your needs or whether your baby can be breastfed. My advice is to wait before buying a breast pump, you'll be able to choose the right model for you better once the situation arises. In fact, some of our breast pumps are delivered within 24 hours.

3. A changing bag

You'll spend most of the first few weeks after birth at home, and most nappies, creams and changes of clothes fit easily into a handbag or sports bag. But a changing bag will become (almost) indispensable over the following months. In fact, some of them look just like handbags!

4. The nappy bin

I still think a nappy bin is unnecessary. OK, it's winter, I have a balcony, and I've turned my bin into a nappy bin. I know it'll be different in the summer; my nose won't appreciate the lingering smells!

5. A space heater

Baby needs to stay warm when he's being changed or when he gets out of the bath. But if the temperature in the rooms is pleasant without a space heater, I don't think such an item is necessary. A word of advice: after bathing, wrap baby directly in a warm cloth before dressing him.

6. A baby toothbrush (finger) and toothpaste

While some children are born with teeth, the first quenticles usually start coming out around the sixth month. There's plenty of time to get all the items you need for dental care before the first appearance.

7. A steriliser

If you're planning to breastfeed, a steriliser won't do you any good until you express your milk or give your baby a bottle. I strongly advise you to use it then to make things easier for yourself. It's up to you to choose between an electric model and one that can be put in the microwave.

8. A cot, cradle on wheels, nursing bed or baby hammock

It doesn't matter where your child sleeps, you don't need any of these four variations. I've never used a hammock, but come to think of it, I could have rocked my baby to sleep in one too. In the early days, it was the flexible cradle on wheels that was especially helpful.

9. A multifunction cooking appliance or bottle warmer

Both will be very useful to you, but not from birth. You won't use the cooking appliance until the fourth month, if you're already starting to feed baby porridge by then. The bottle warmer will be useful as soon as you start bottle-feeding instead of breast-feeding. It can also be used to heat glass jars.

10. Baby care products

The skin ecosystem, which forms a barrier against bacteria, is not yet functioning in infants. They are therefore prone to hypersensitive reactions to water and care products. Shampoos, shower gels or skincare products should therefore not be used (or used very little) at first.

These 10 products will come in very handy on a daily basis. But don't rush to the shelves as soon as you're born. I could show you others, but I've provided you with my TOP 10, gathered from my own experience.

Did you buy items far too early? Or products you never ended up using? Have you given them away or resold them? Are there any other must-have items you think should be on my list? Feel free to respond in the comments. If I get enough feedback, I'll go on to tell you about the do's and don'ts.
