Fil d’Ecosse refers to a cotton fiber that has been refined through the mercerization process. This process reduces the length of the fibers, changes their cross-section, and causes them to swell. These structural changes result in greater strength, better dyeability, and a washable, silk-like sheen. This method was developed in the mid-19th century by John Mercer and leads to higher quality in textiles.
