The rugged beauty of the Cederberg Mountain region in the southwest of South Africa is home to the rooibos plant – about 200 km north of Cape Town, around the towns of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal. The exact age of the red bush (Afrikaans rooi = red and bos = bush) is unclear, but it was first described as a medicinal plant by botanist Carl Thunberg in 1772. Unlike black or green tea, rooibos tea contains no caffeine and few tannins, preventing any potential effects such as bitterness or insomnia.
