Biodegradable products are made from materials that are completely broken down by naturally occurring microorganisms and converted into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. Unlike compostable products, these do not need to be broken down within a specific time frame. The production primarily involves cellulose and fiber products based on sugarcane and palm leaves, as well as products derived from starch plants. According to the definition, it does not matter whether renewable or non-renewable, i.e., fossil resources are used in production. Under real environmental conditions, biodegradable plastics gradually break down into microplastics, which decompose very slowly into their chemical components. Oxo-degradable plastics have also been enriched with additives that break down into microplastic particles when exposed to heat or sunlight, but these are hardly broken down.
