Product details
Harvested from 28-year-old vines growing in Glenrosa and Escort gravel soils, the grapes are fermented with the estate's natural yeasts in open stainless steel containers. At the peak of fermentation, the skins are punched down. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrels. The wine undergoes minimal processing, utilizing the natural principle of gravity. No mechanical pumps are used in the production and transfer of the wine. 30% is aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels. During this period, the wine is racked four times. It is not filtered, and the sulfur content is kept to a minimum.
This wine has a powerful nose of raspberry and fynbos, with a hint of mint and violet. It is an extremely elegant wine with smooth, firm tannins and an underlying cherry fruit structure that gives it a juicy yet full finish.
This Merlot is named after a famous black mailbox on State Route 375, also known as the "Extraterrestrial Highway," located in southern Nevada in the United States. The mailbox is labeled "Alien" and serves as a meeting point for those interested in extraterrestrial life due to its proximity to the UFO hotspot known as Area 51.
