The family-owned winery in southern Sicily was established in the 1990s in the municipality of Sambuca di Sicilia by Lake Arancio in the province of Agrigento. The owners are cousins Alessio, Francesca, and Santi Planeta, who, with the help of internationally renowned oenologist Carlo Corino, transformed the old winery into a top Italian operation with state-of-the-art cellar technology within a few years. On over 360 hectares of vineyards across six different wine-growing areas in Sicily, indigenous and international grape varieties are cultivated, with a strong emphasis on growing the right grape variety in the right soil. Their motto is to provide a modern interpretation of historical traditions and grape varieties. They are also deeply committed to environmental sustainability in the production of their excellent olive oil. Robert Parker considers Planeta to be the benchmark estate of this region. Planeta is referred to as the rising star of Sicily. In the wine guide "Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia 1999," the winery was named the number one winery of the year.
