Today, speick is almost exclusively found in the Nockberge Biosphere Park in Carinthia, where the conditions for the plant are optimal: low-calcium, acidic soils in treeless elevations starting from about 1800 meters. The delicate, small plant grows to a maximum height of 15 centimeters. The flowers are pale yellow, and thus speick does not visually stand out from the abundance of alpine flora. However, the characteristic scent is noticeable, especially when the leaves of the plant turn yellow around August/September.
