Prima Prostata PSA Test

The Prostate PSA test checks the PSA level (Prostate Specific Antigen) in the blood to detect changes in the prostate. The prostate, or prostate gland, is a gland that is part of the male genital system. It is located in the pelvic area beneath the bladder and has a pyramidal, fibromuscular structure with a base at the top. The prostate is responsible for several functions, including the ability to liquefy and release sperm. This can vary depending on the presence of localized pathologies. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Its level provides insights into the physiological conditions of the prostate itself. PSA is normally present in small amounts in the blood of men with a healthy prostate. The presence of prostate changes, such as prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and cancer, leads to an increase in PSA levels in the blood. PSA levels can physiologically rise with age or after surgeries on the prostate gland following specific diagnostic tests, such as rectal examinations, biopsies, and prostate ultrasounds.
