About the test: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect your urinary system, which includes your bladder, urethra, and kidneys. These infections are among the most common types of infections in the human body and often occur when bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli (E. coli), enter the urinary tract through the urethra. Women are more likely to be affected by urinary tract infections due to their anatomical structure, as their urethra is shorter and located closer to the anus, which can facilitate the entry of bacteria. Sexual activity, the use of spermicides, hormonal changes, and pregnancy are factors that can increase the risk for women. Symptoms of urinary tract infections may include a burning sensation during urination, increased urgency to urinate, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, urinary tract infections can lead to fever and back pain, indicating possible involvement of the kidneys.
