About the test Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that enters the human body and settles in the digestive tract. These bacteria can cause stomach ulcers that develop on the inner wall of the stomach. Ulcers can also occur in the duodenum, referred to as duodenal ulcers or peptic ulcers. In some cases, this can even lead to stomach cancer. Once H. pylori enters the body, it attacks the stomach lining, which normally protects against the stomach acid used for digesting food. Once the bacteria have caused sufficient damage, the acid can penetrate the stomach's inner wall, leading to the formation of ulcers. These ulcers can cause bleeding and infections or block the normal passage of food through the digestive tract. The transmission of H. pylori bacteria typically occurs from person to person through direct contact with saliva, vomit, or stool. Additionally, H. pylori can spread through contaminated food or water.
