About the test HIV stands for 'human immunodeficiency virus' - a virus that attacks the immune system and impairs the body's ability to fight everyday infections and diseases. Without treatment, this almost always leads to serious illness after a while, which is known as AIDS. After your first contact with HIV, it takes 6-12 weeks for your body to develop the antibodies that this test can detect. If you carry out an HIV self-test during this period, the result may be falsified. A reliable result can therefore only be obtained after 12 weeks of potential contact with the virus.
