What did you do during the war, Pappi?

Sicily, 1943: US Captain Cash is tasked with capturing the small village of Valerno. The weary soldiers prepare to attack, but to their surprise, the villagers are ready to surrender. They have just one condition: the upcoming annual wine festival must take place as planned, and the attackers are warmly invited. The festival is great fun for everyone. Captain Cash quickly gets drunk, and Lieutenant Christian takes command. To report on the progress of the attack to the command center, the unit, along with the villagers, stages the battle. However, the ruse is at risk of being uncovered when German troops suddenly rush to aid their Italian allies.

This wonderfully exaggerated, yet somewhat silly war parody is directed by comedy master Blake Edwards, based on a screenplay by William Peter Blatty, who would later achieve worldwide fame with his horror classic "The Exorcist." Here, he adapted a story by director Edwards and Maurice Richlin. Edwards once said about his understanding of comedy: "When something is so bad and unbearable, you have to make a joke out of it." Today, "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" is considered one of the best film parodies set during World War II.
