Dr. Sayer (Robin Williams) is a young doctor who is new to the neurology clinic. In addition to the usual mental patients, he encounters individuals suffering from a rare and peculiar mental illness. These are hopeless cases, abandoned by the medical community, languishing behind a wall of silence. Leonard (Robert De Niro) is one of these patients. Fascinated by his grotesque charm and the mysterious nature of his illness, Dr. Sayer decides to test a new medication on him.
