The London publisher Bartholomew "Barley" Blair (Sean Connery) is sent a manuscript by the Russian physicist "Dante" (Klaus Maria Brandauer), which Blair is supposed to publish. However, the manuscript is politically explosive and contains top-secret information about the Soviet Union's military status in the Cold War, which eventually lands Barley in the mills of the secret services. At the urging of the British and Americans, he travels to Moscow as a temporary agent to verify the claims made in the manuscript. There, however, new complications are not long in coming, including in the form of Dante's beautiful middle woman Katja (Michelle Pfeiffer)...
