The Ruhr area in the summer of 1954: After ten long years, Richard Lubanski returns from Soviet captivity and finds the world unrecognizable. His wife Christina has confidently supported the family, his adult children are leading their own lives, and his youngest, whom he has never seen, is a fan of football stars—especially Helmut Rahn, the "Boss" of Rot-Weiss Essen. While Lubanski desperately struggles for a place in this world that has become foreign to him, the best football teams in the world are competing in the World Cup in Switzerland.
