The man from Virginia

In "The Man from Virginia - The Virginian," the story revolves around cattle rustling. Cattle have gone missing from the ranches around Medicine Bow, and the Virginian suspects that a man named Trampas (Brian Donleavy) is behind it. Why wouldn't he? Not only does he wear a black hat, but he is dressed in black from head to toe. The Virginian is also somewhat suspicious of his friend Steve, who seems to be a bit too friendly with the man in black lately. The plot leads these tension lines to a final confrontation, where the Virginian must choose between friendship and upholding the code of the West, potentially losing Molly's affection in the process.

This is the film where Trampas calls the Virginian by name, and the Virginian draws his weapon and says to him, "Smile when you call me that." Trampas replies, "With a gun in my belly, I always smile." "The Virginian" has been adapted into film at least five times, starting with a silent film version in 1914 by Cecil B. DeMille starring Dustin Farnum. Based on a classic Western novel by Owen Wister, "The Virginian" was turned into a long-running television series in the 1960s ("The Men from Shiloh") that still airs today.
